Pretty Big Movement

Pretty BIG Movement LLC based in New York, NY is a full-figured dance company specializing in various dance genres such as Hip-Hop, Jazz, African, Latin, Modern and so much more. Founder/ CEO Akira Armstrong realized there wasn't a platform for curvy women in mainstream media so Ms. Armstrong sought out to create the platform today known as Pretty BIG Movement. By 2015, the dance troupe performed in Ladies Of Hip Hop, Carnival (Choreographers Ball), Ms. Full Figured USA pageant & Press Release, The 3rd Female Hip Hop Honor Award Show, Salt N Pepa, Lane Bryant (I'm No Angle campaign), New York, NY fashion week (Plus is Equal), Full Beauty commercial, Mz007 concert, and competed on NBC America's Got Talent Season 10. In past events, Pretty BIG Movement became an advocate for Black Lives Matter in their latest concept video "Personally" as they anticipate touring while filming their very own reality show. Pretty BIG Movement is a diverse dance group ranging across various ethnic backgrounds with one goal in common: finding liberation through movement and inclusivity.

Danez Smith

Danez Smith is a Black, queer, poz writer & performer from St. Paul, MN. Danez is the author of [insert] boy (YesYes Books, 2014), winner of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award and the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry, and Don’t Call Us Dead (Graywolf Press, 2017). Danez is also the author of two chapbooks, hands on your knees (2013, Penmanship Books) and black movie (2015, Button Poetry), winner of the Button Poetry Prize. They are the recipient of fellowships from the Poetry Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, and is a 2017 National Endowment for the Arts Fellow. Danez's work has been featured widely including in on Buzzfeed, Blavity, PBS NewsHour, and on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. They are a 2-time Individual World Poetry Slam finalist, 3-time Rustbelt Poetry Slam Champion, and a founding member of the Dark Noise Collective.

Danez was featured in American Academy of Poet's Emerging WritersSeries by National Book Award Finalist Patricia Smith. Like her, Danez bridges the poetics of the stage to that of the page. Danez's work transcends arbitrary boundaries to present work that is gripping, dismantling of oppression constructs, and striking on the human heart. Often centered around intersections of race, class, sexuality, faith, and social justice, Danez uses rhythm, fierce raw power, and image to re-imagine the world as takes it apart in their work.

Brown Girls Burlesque’s mission is to Entertain, Titillate, Educate and Liberate!

Going into it’s 10th year BGB is the premiere theatrical burlesque production company showcasing women of color. Having shared the stage with artists such as The Roots, Burnt Sugar, and Melvin Van Peebles BGB challenges mainstream perceptions of black beauty, body sovereignty and sexuality. BGB’s presents live shows at venues including Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, Brooklyn Museum, Kumble Theater at LIU and Macau, China’s Sun City Casino bringing scintillating entertainment to all who behold their witty and diverse shows.
